Now don’t get me wrong, I love an Easter egg; anything coated in dark chocolate is right up my street and I eat plenty of them every Easter holiday! Easter though, for me, is also a time of something more; a time of reflection and hope. It’s a time that reminds me of the potential within each of us for renewal. I also think it’s a time for us to pause and reconnect with the world around us.

Growing up, I always preferred Christmas and it’s easy to see why; the gifts, the parties, the decorations. As I’ve gotten older though, I’ve realised how much more significant the Easter story is, to me and also to Christians around the world. Easter is a time that should remind us that, even in our darkest moments, there’s a glimmer of hope, a chance for a fresh start. The disciples, as they watched Jesus hanging on the cross, would have definitely felt that all was lost, their dreams were shattered and that it was all over. The resurrection of Jesus means hope invaded Earth in the middle of all that darkness. The reality of Easter is the truth that from that one event came the most powerful beginning for us all!

As I sit writing this, the daffodils in my garden are blooming and other plants that were sleeping through winter are coming back to life. Just as the plants bloom and the days get brighter, we can use the time to reflect on new habits that should be developed or returned to so we can embrace new, positive beginnings. It’s a time to let go of those past mistakes, perhaps forgive that friend or relative for those harsh words spoken and move forward with a renewed sense of purpose and direction. In the hustle and bustle of everyday life, it’s easy to lose sight of what’s important and Easter is an opportunity to pause, reflect and reconnect with our own values and beliefs.

When we turn on the news, we often see a world in turmoil, a world that is chaotic and uncertain. Easter reminds us that there is always light at the end of the tunnel. It’s a reminder that, even in our darkest moments, there’s always still a reason to believe that things will get better. It’s a message of resilience, strength and an unbreakable love that is hugely comforting, especially during challenging times. So as I celebrate Easter this year, I’ll do so with a full heart and optimism for the future. My prayer is that you can do the same.

I wish you and your families a Happy Easter.

Jonno.
